Mario Gotze picked the perfect time to return to form as he broke an extraordinary drought against former club Bayern Munich.

Auba strikes to keep Bayern off summit

The Borussia Dortmund man had returned to his boyhood team in the summer of 2016, after three seasons at the Allianz Arena.

Until Saturday, however, he had found life tough with Dortmund, failing to make an impact in a difficult start to the season for BVB.

But there is no doubting his class, and the 24-year-old forward played a key role in Dortmund's 1-0 Klassiker victory that cuts the gap to three points behind Carlo Ancelotti's second-placed side.

After just 11 minutes, Gotze played in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang inside the penalty area and the Gabon international converted for the game's only goal.

Remarkably, it was the first time this season that the Germany star had been involved in a goal.

Dortmund fans will be hoping that the assist kick-starts Gotze's season, as both German giants currently chase shock leaders RB Leipzig.

The club have broken seven years of Klassiker domination, marking the first time neither Bayern nor Dortmund have led the league after 11 games since BayerLeverkusen in the 2009-10 campaign.
